The National Women’s Business Council (NWBC) is searching for a college/university undergraduate or graduate student to join the team for a summer fellowship with a ten week minimum term beginning late May, 2017 (flexible start date).
The NWBC was established via the Women’s Business Ownership Act of 1988, HR 5050. Throughout the years, the NWBC has brought together women business owners, policymakers, bankers, representatives of women’s business organizations, and other stakeholders to identify the unique challenges facing women business owners and to formulate potential solutions.
As the government’s only independent voice for women entrepreneurs, the NWBC’s mission is two-fold:
- Support and conduct groundbreaking research that provides insight into women business enterprises from startup to success, and
- Share the findings to ultimately incite constructive action and policies.

This NWBC Summer Fellowship is unpaid and based in Washington, DC. A transit subsidy is provided. This is a full-time fellowship, with a minimum requirement of 35 hours per week. The position is open to students of all academic backgrounds. The program will also include leadership and professional development programming and mentorship opportunities.
The NWBC Summer Fellow will report directly to the Senior Research Manager, and is expected to:
- Execute outreach strategy including events, social media campaigns, communications and research releases
- Track the work of NWBC’s three stakeholders in relation to legislation and activities: U.S. Small Business Administration, Congress and the White House
- Analyze data, conduct literature reviews for potential future research topics, curate existing research, and develop content for research deliverables such as fact sheets and issue briefs
- Assist with general operations of the office such as responding to incoming inquiries and managing contacts.
A competitive candidate will:
- Be an innovative self-starter who can complete tasks under tight deadlines
- Demonstrate strong attention to detail
- Possess strong writing and editing skills
- Demonstrate strong organizational skills
- Have an ability to work independently and as a part of a team environment
- Be interested in women’s business ownership and motivated by the organizational mission
- Have computer literacy, including basic research skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office, particularly with Microsoft Excel
- Possess strong analytical skills, including basic statistical knowledge
