As of 2012, 36 percent of all non-farm and privately-held businesses in the U.S. are owned by women. Yet, women-owned businesses are largely under-represented among high-growth firms. In particular, Census research indicates that less than two percent of women-owned firms generate revenues of $1 million or more. This same research demonstrates that firms with $1 million or more in revenues are far more likely than smaller firms to have employees: Ninety-seven percent of firms with at least $1 million in revenue have employees, compared to only 16 percent of firms with less than $1 million in revenue. Thus, increasing the number of high-growth women-owned firms would not only support women’s entrepreneurship, but may also notably contribute to job creation.
Please join the National Women’s Business Council online for our next Public Meeting on Thursday, June 30th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm ET to discuss the potential of, and barriers to, high-growth women-owned firms. The online meeting will commence with opening remarks from Council Chairwoman, Carla Harris, and updates on the Council’s recent research, announcement of the Council’s FY2016 research portfolio and activities from our Council leadership. The Council, at this time, will offer a tutorial of our *never before seen * online resource platform – Grow Her Business: A Resource from Start-up to Scale-up. The public meeting will conclude with a dynamic panel discussion.
